Château L'Evangile
L'Evangile owns a strip of Pomerol with Petrus on one side and the Saint-Émilion boundary with Cheval Blanc on the other. It has been in Rothschild hands since 1990. Because Pomerol has no classification at all, buyers tend to treat price as the only ranking available, which is how good Pomerol estates get overlooked and expensive ones get overrated.
Blason de L'Evangile carries the younger vines, including the sections replanted after the estate reworked its vineyard. Pomerol properties are small, so a second wine here is a real constraint rather than a convenience: every bottle of Blason is a bottle of grand vin not made. That is why the selection is taken seriously.
Blason gives you the estate's clay-and-gravel Merlot character at a fraction of the outlay, and it is ready far sooner. The grand vin is a keeping wine. If it is being opened this year, the extra money is buying patience you are not using.
