Château Pichon Baron

Pichon Baron sits at the southern edge of Pauillac, its gravel running right up against Latour's. The confusion worth clearing first: Pichon Baron and Pichon Comtesse de Lalande are two separate estates, divided in 1850 and owned separately ever since. Les Griffons belongs to Baron. The Comtesse wines we stock are a different property and sit elsewhere on the site.

Les Griffons is not what the grand vin rejected. It draws mostly on younger vines and on plots further from the old Cabernet core, and it is built as its own wine: a larger Merlot share in most years, less new oak, a shorter wait. The grand vin concentrates the oldest vines on the deepest gravel and takes the strictest barrel selection.

If the bottle is being opened within three or four years, Les Griffons is the better wine on the night. The grand vin earns its price only if you can leave it alone for a decade. Drunk young, most of what you paid for stays locked in.
