Pomerol

The smallest important appellation in Bordeaux — roughly 800 hectares, next to Saint-Émilion on the right bank. There is no classification, no château hierarchy and no grand architecture; several of the most expensive wines in the world are made in what look like farmhouses.

What is here

Merlot dominates, often with a little Cabernet Franc. Pétrus and Le Pin are the names that set the price ceiling; below them Trotanoy, L'Évangile, La Conseillante, Vieux Château Certan, Clinet, Gazin and La Fleur-Pétrus make up the recognised top tier, with a long tail of small estates behind them.

What to expect

Pomerol's plateau holds a seam of iron-rich clay, and the wines from it are the plushest thing Bordeaux makes — dense, rounded, low in obvious tannin. That texture is why Pomerol is often the bottle to open when Bordeaux has to please a table rather than a critic. Because the appellation is tiny and demand is not, prices sit above what the same quality costs in the Médoc.

Serving

16–18°C, decanted an hour ahead. Pomerol is generally approachable earlier than left-bank Bordeaux of the same vintage, but the top estates still hold for decades.
