Right Bank
Right Bank Bordeaux
Bordeaux splits in two along the river. The left bank — Médoc and Graves — is gravel, and gravel suits Cabernet Sauvignon. The right bank, east of the Dordogne, is clay and limestone, and those suit Merlot. Almost everything that distinguishes the two halves follows from that.
The appellations
Saint-Émilion is the largest and best known, with its own regularly-revised classification. Pomerol is tiny, unclassified, and home to Pétrus and Le Pin. Around them sit the satellites and neighbours that offer the same grapes at a fraction of the price: Lalande-de-Pomerol, Fronsac, Canon-Fronsac, Castillon, Montagne-Saint-Émilion and the rest of the Saint-Émilion satellites.
What to expect
Merlot ripens earlier and carries softer tannin than Cabernet Sauvignon, so right-bank Bordeaux is generally rounder in youth and drinkable sooner. If a table finds classified Médoc austere, this is the side of the river to pour from. It is also where the value sits: a good Castillon or Fronsac delivers recognisably right-bank character at everyday money.
Serving
16–18°C, decanted an hour ahead for anything classified. Satellites and Fronsac drink on opening.
