Saint-Estephe
Saint-Estèphe
The northernmost of the four classified Médoc communes, and the one furthest from the moderating gravel of Margaux. Saint-Estèphe has more clay in its soil than its neighbours, which holds water in dry years and makes the wines firmer, later-ripening and slower to open.
What is here
Two Second Growths — Cos d'Estournel and Montrose — followed by Calon-Ségur, Lafon-Rochet and Cos Labory. Underneath the classified estates sits a deep bench of crus bourgeois: Phélan Ségur, Meyney, Ormes de Pez, Haut-Marbuzet and Les Ormes Sorbet among them.
What to expect
Cabernet Sauvignon–led, with more Merlot than Pauillac to soften the clay's grip. Saint-Estèphe was for decades the least fashionable of the four communes, and the estates responded by planting more Merlot and picking later — so modern Saint-Estèphe is more approachable than its older reputation suggests, while remaining the Médoc's most structured address.
Serving and cellaring
16–18°C, decanted an hour or more. Classified estates from a serious vintage want ten to fifteen years; the crus bourgeois are drinking at five to eight.
