Chateau Sociando-Mallet

Sociando-Mallet sits on a gravel rise at Saint-Seurin, at the northern end of the Haut-Medoc, close enough to the estuary that the water moderates the vineyard. It is known for one deliberate refusal: the estate stayed out of the cru bourgeois classification rather than submit to it. People read unclassified as unranked and assume that means lesser. Classification measured prices and paperwork, not what is in the glass.

The range is simple. There is essentially one wine, offered across vintages, so the choice is not grand vin against second wine but young against aged. Younger vintages arrive firm, with the tannin still forward. Vintages from the 1990s and 2000s have softened and turned savoury, and are drinking now rather than later.

Where paying more stops buying flavour is the old bottles. A 1990s vintage costs more because few remain and because someone stored it properly, not because it delivers more per glass than a good recent year.
