USA
American labelling works differently from European labelling, and knowing the rule changes how you read the bottle.
An AVA — American Viticultural Area — defines a place and nothing else. It does not dictate which grapes may be planted, what the yields must be, or how the wine is made. That freedom is why two wines from the same AVA can be built on entirely different principles.
The federal minimum for a named variety is 75 per cent, so a bottle labelled Cabernet Sauvignon may legally contain a quarter of something else. Oregon sets a stricter 90 per cent for most varieties.
California supplies the bulk of what reaches Hong Kong, but Oregon (Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley) and Washington (Cabernet and Syrah, Columbia Valley) are working in very different conditions.
