Crafted by Jean-Luc Baldès, a benchmark producer in Cahors, the Malbec Du Clos 2018 exemplifies the structural purity of South-West France’s Lot Valley. Sourced from clay-limestone and siliceous gravel terraces, this cuvée demonstrates the native Malbec (Auxerrois) grape's inherent depth without reliant oak masking. The 2018 vintage offered generous sunshine tempered by cool night breezes, yielding phenolic maturity alongside vital refreshing acidity.
Fermented in temperature-controlled vats and matured to preserve vibrant varietal identity, the wine strikes a harmonious balance between a robust tannic backbone and dark fruit purity. It displays commendable regional typicity, suited for near-term enjoyment following decantation or cellaring over the medium term.
Tasting notes
Pours a deep, opaque garnet-purple. The nose opens with focused aromas of ripe black plum, cassis, dried violet, and a hint of crushed graphite. On the palate, a medium to full body carries tight, grainy tannins and lively acidity, surrounding flavours of dark blackberry, cracked pepper, and subtle forest floor. The finish is persistent, dry, and distinctly savory with an iron-like mineral tension.
