Carmes de Rieussec represents the distinguished second wine of Château Rieussec, a Premier Cru Classé estate from the esteemed 1855 classification of Sauternes. This cuvée is crafted from parcels of younger vines or specific selections that, while not destined for the Grand Vin, nonetheless benefit from the same exceptional terroir and meticulous viticultural practices.

The vineyards are situated in the heart of Sauternes, where the confluence of the Ciron and Garonne rivers creates the ideal microclimate for the development of Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. This essential fungus concentrates sugars and acids, imparting the unique complexity and luscious character for which Sauternes is renowned. The blend typically features a dominance of Sémillon, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc and a touch of Muscadelle, each contributing to the wine's aromatic depth and structural integrity.

The 2014 vintage in Sauternes was marked by favourable conditions, allowing for a balanced development of noble rot and resulting in wines that combine freshness with richness. Carmes de Rieussec 2014 offers an earlier drinking window than its elder sibling, presenting a refined introduction to the house style with its characteristic elegance and aromatic precision.

Tasting notes

The Carmes de Rieussec 2014 presents a luminous golden hue in the glass. On the nose, an intricate bouquet unfolds, revealing classic Sauternes characteristics: notes of candied apricot, ripe peach, and marmalade are interwoven with delicate hints of acacia honey, saffron, and a subtle minerality. The influence of noble rot is evident, lending a captivating complexity.

The palate is both opulent and remarkably fresh, a testament to the vintage's balance. A rich sweetness is beautifully counterpointed by a vibrant acidity, preventing any cloying sensation. Flavours echo the nose, with layers of dried fruit, citrus zest, and a touch of ginger spice, culminating in a long, persistent finish that leaves an impression of elegant sweetness and refined structure. This wine is approachable now but possesses the capacity for further development over the medium term.
