Château d'Armailhac, a Fifth Growth estate situated in the esteemed Pauillac appellation, holds a unique position within the Baron Philippe de Rothschild family of properties. Historically known by various names, it was formally re-established under its current identity in 1989, benefiting from the same meticulous viticultural and winemaking expertise as its illustrious neighbours, Mouton Rothschild and Clerc Milon.

The 2016 vintage in Bordeaux is widely celebrated as one of exceptional quality, particularly for the Left Bank. Favourable weather patterns, including a dry summer followed by ideal conditions during harvest, allowed for optimal ripeness and concentration in the grapes. This resulted in wines with profound colour, aromatic complexity, and a robust tannic structure, promising longevity.

Armailhac's terroir, characterised by deep gravels over clay-limestone, is perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, which typically forms the backbone of its blend, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The winemaking regime involves traditional fermentation followed by maturation in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, contributing to the wine's refined structure and aromatic integration.

Tasting notes

The 2016 Château d'Armailhac presents a deep, opaque ruby hue. On the nose, it offers a complex bouquet of ripe blackcurrant, cassis, and dark plum, interwoven with classic Pauillac notes of cedar, graphite, and a hint of tobacco leaf. Subtle nuances of violet and spice emerge with aeration.

The palate is full-bodied and impressively structured, showcasing a core of concentrated dark fruit framed by firm yet polished tannins. A vibrant acidity provides freshness and balance, leading to a persistent finish marked by mineral undertones and lingering dark chocolate. While approachable now, its inherent power and balance suggest significant potential for further development and complexity over the next two decades.
