Château Lagrange, a distinguished Third Growth of the 1855 Classification, stands as a testament to the refined terroir of Saint-Julien. The 2004 vintage, while not a year of opulence, is celebrated for its classical structure and balance, characteristic of a well-executed Bordeaux vintage. Situated on a gravelly plateau, the estate's vineyards benefit from excellent drainage and sun exposure, contributing to the concentration and aromatic complexity of its fruit.
The winemaking philosophy at Lagrange emphasizes precision, with meticulous vineyard management and a careful selection process. The blend, typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks before undergoing malolactic fermentation and maturation in French oak barriques, often with a significant proportion of new wood. This approach yields a wine that embodies the Saint-Julien archetype: elegant, firm, and built for graceful evolution in the cellar.
Tasting notes
The 2004 Château Lagrange presents a deep garnet hue, showing signs of graceful maturity. On the nose, a complex bouquet unfolds with classic Saint-Julien markers: ripe blackcurrant and cassis intermingle with cedar, tobacco leaf, and a subtle hint of forest floor. The palate is medium-bodied, showcasing a harmonious balance between resolved tannins and vibrant acidity. Flavours of dark fruit persist, complemented by notes of graphite and a touch of savoury spice, leading to a persistent, elegant finish. This vintage is drinking beautifully now, yet retains the structure for further enjoyment over the coming years.
