Kumeu River’s expansion into Hawke’s Bay yields a distinct expression of New Zealand Chardonnay from the Rays Road vineyard. Situated on elevated, limestone-influenced clay hillsides, this dry-farmed site produces fruit defined by linear tension and vibrant natural acidity, offering a compelling contrast to the broader, heritage vineyard sites in Kumeu.
Crafted by Master of Wine Michael Brajkovich, the 2024 vintage underwent whole-cluster pressing followed by indigenous yeast fermentation. Maturation in a combination of seasoned French oak puncheons and stainless steel tank preserves the pristine varietal clarity, while partial malolactic fermentation adds texture without diminishing the wine's chiseled mineral frame.
Tasting notes
Vibrant aromas of white peach, lime peel, and crushed chalk are framed by subtle toast and raw almond notes. The palate is light-to-medium in body, presenting taut citrus and crisp green apple flavors underpinned by a persistent, saline mineral core and taut acidity through a dry finish.
