Region
Rutherglen is hot and dry, and is where Australian fortified wine began. Styles of this kind require long barrel ageing and oxidative maturation, and the climate provides exactly those conditions.
Variety & Style
Tawny is made from red grapes, fortified, then aged for extended periods in old wood where it oxidises slowly. Expect caramel, roasted nuts, dried fruit and a touch of coffee. Drier and less sweet than Muscat.
What to Expect
If you have never tried Australian fortified wine, Tawny is generally the easier introduction because it carries less sweetness. This is the "Classic" tier — second of four — which is the sensible place to start.
Serving
14–16°C, small glass. Chocolate, nuts, dried fruit, cigars. Keeps for months once opened.
