Alión, established in 1991 by the venerable Bodegas Vega Sicilia, represents a contemporary interpretation of Ribera del Duero's profound terroir. Sourced from select parcels across the appellation, including Pesquera de Duero, Padilla de Duero, and Valbuena de Duero, the vineyards are predominantly planted with Tinto Fino, the local clone of Tempranillo.
The 2021 vintage of Alión embodies the estate's commitment to crafting a powerful yet refined expression of the region. Winemaking involves meticulous selection, followed by malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels. The wine then undergoes an extensive ageing period, typically 12 to 14 months, exclusively in new French oak, before further maturation in bottle. This regime imparts structure, complexity, and a distinctive aromatic profile, designed for both immediate enjoyment and considerable cellaring.
Tasting notes
The 2021 Alión, while youthful, presents a formidable aromatic intensity. Expect a concentrated bouquet of ripe black fruits—blackberry, cassis, and dark cherry—interwoven with nuanced notes of cedar, vanilla bean, and toasted spice derived from its new French oak maturation. On the palate, it is full-bodied and commanding, with a dense core of fruit framed by firm, yet polished tannins and a vibrant acidity that promises longevity. The finish is exceptionally long and persistent, hinting at the profound complexity that will unfold with further bottle age.
