The Antinori Solaia 2017 Magnum represents a pinnacle of Tuscan winemaking, a celebrated "Super Tuscan" from the esteemed Marchesi Antinori family. Sourced exclusively from the eponymous Solaia vineyard, a 20-hectare parcel adjacent to the Tignanello estate in the heart of Chianti Classico, this wine benefits from a unique terroir. The vineyard, with its south-west exposure and stony, calcareous marl soils, is situated at an elevation of 350-400 meters above sea level, providing optimal conditions for grape ripening.

The 2017 vintage, characterized by a warm and dry growing season in Tuscany, yielded grapes of remarkable concentration and intensity. Solaia's classic blend, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with significant contributions from Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc, undergoes meticulous vinification. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation in French oak barriques. The wine is then aged for approximately 18 months in new French oak barrels, allowing for complex integration of fruit and wood tannins.

Presented in a 150cl Magnum format, this bottling is ideal for extended cellaring, promoting a slower, more graceful evolution of its intricate aromatics and structural components. Solaia consistently demonstrates a profound expression of its unique site and the Antinori commitment to excellence.

Tasting notes

The Antinori Solaia 2017 presents a deep, impenetrable ruby red hue. On the nose, it offers a complex and evolving bouquet of ripe blackcurrant, dark cherry, and plum, interwoven with sophisticated notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, and sweet spices like vanilla and clove. Subtle hints of violet and graphite add further layers of intrigue.

The palate is full-bodied and opulent, yet remarkably balanced. A powerful core of concentrated dark fruit is framed by firm, finely-grained tannins that provide structure and longevity. The acidity is vibrant, lending freshness and precision to the rich fruit profile. The finish is exceptionally long and persistent, echoing the aromatic complexity with a lingering minerality and a touch of dark chocolate. This vintage, while approachable, promises significant evolution with further cellaring.
