Ardbeg Corryvreckan (1x70cl)
Ardbeg Corryvreckan (1x70cl)
Ardbeg, a revered distillery on the remote island of Islay, is globally celebrated for its uncompromisingly peated single malt Scotch whiskies. The Corryvreckan expression, named after the formidable whirlpool off the coast of Jura, embodies a similar force of nature in its character.
This particular bottling is a testament to Ardbeg's mastery of maturation, utilising a complex interplay of ex-bourbon barrels and virgin French oak casks. This dual-cask regime imparts a profound depth, layering the distillery's signature phenolic intensity with a distinctive peppery spice and a robust, textural mouthfeel. It stands as a powerful and intricate representation of Islay's unique terroir and Ardbeg's bold winemaking philosophy.
Tasting notes
The nose opens with an immediate surge of intense peat smoke, interwoven with notes of tar, creosote, and a distinct maritime salinity. Beneath this powerful initial impression, layers of dark chocolate, blackcurrant, and a hint of menthol emerge, framed by a peppery spice.
On the palate, Corryvreckan delivers a full-bodied and chewy texture. A wave of cracked black pepper and chilli oil dominates, quickly followed by rich espresso, liquorice, and a surprising sweetness of ripe black fruits. The signature Ardbeg peat smoke remains ever-present, evolving into a complex interplay of savoury and sweet elements.
The finish is exceptionally long and profound, with lingering notes of smoky bacon, aniseed, and a dry, tannic grip from the French oak, culminating in a satisfyingly spicy and phenolic warmth.
