Caiarossa 2013 (1x75cl)
Caiarossa, situated in the Riparbella commune of Tuscany's Val di Cecina, stands as a beacon of biodynamic viticulture. The estate's philosophy, deeply rooted in Rudolf Steiner's principles, seeks to foster a holistic ecosystem, allowing the unique terroir to express itself authentically.
The 2013 vintage of Caiarossa, an IGT Toscana, is a meticulously crafted blend, typically comprising seven varietals: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, and Syrah. This "Super Tuscan" composition is a testament to the estate's commitment to complexity and regional expression.
The vineyards, characterised by diverse soils rich in clay, sand, and limestone with significant iron deposits, are cultivated at varying elevations, contributing to the wine's multifaceted profile. Following fermentation in concrete vats, the wine undergoes extended maturation in French oak barriques, a combination of new and seasoned wood, for approximately 14 to 16 months, followed by further bottle ageing. This careful oak regime integrates seamlessly, enhancing the wine's structure and aromatic complexity without overshadowing its intrinsic fruit character.
Tasting notes
The 2013 Caiarossa presents a profound aromatic spectrum, revealing notes of dark cherry, cassis, and plum, interwoven with nuances of cedar, tobacco leaf, and a subtle minerality. On the palate, it is full-bodied and elegantly structured, with refined tannins and a vibrant acidity that underscores its Tuscan origins. Layers of ripe fruit are complemented by savoury undertones and a hint of spice from its oak maturation. The finish is persistent and harmonious, suggesting excellent ageing potential and a sophisticated evolution in bottle.
