The Duckhorn Wine Company, a seminal figure in elevating Napa Valley Merlot, extends its winemaking philosophy to the Decoy label. The 2023 California Merlot exemplifies this commitment, drawing fruit from select vineyards across California to craft a wine of immediate appeal and structural integrity. This bottling reflects a considered approach to regional typicity, showcasing the varietal's inherent fruit character while maintaining the balance and finesse expected from the Duckhorn portfolio. The winemaking regime is designed to highlight purity of fruit, with judicious oak integration to impart complexity without obscuring the primary aromatics.

Tasting notes

On the nose, the 2023 Decoy Merlot presents an aromatic profile of ripe black cherry, plum, and subtle notes of cocoa and dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied, offering a smooth texture and a core of dark fruit, complemented by a hint of vanilla from oak maturation. Tannins are finely integrated, leading to a persistent finish that balances fruit generosity with a refreshing acidity. This wine is crafted for immediate enjoyment while possessing the structure for short-term cellaring.
