Lagavulin 16 Years old (1x70cl)
Lagavulin 16 Year Old stands as a quintessential expression of Islay single malt Scotch whisky, revered globally for its distinctive character and profound depth. Hailing from the rugged southern coast of Islay, this distillery benefits from a unique microclimate and access to some of the island's most intensely peated malted barley.
The whisky's signature profile is intrinsically linked to its provenance. The peat, rich in marine flora, imparts a powerful, medicinal smokiness, while the distillery's proximity to the sea infuses a briny, iodine-rich maritime influence. The slow distillation process, characteristic of Lagavulin, contributes to a heavier, more robust spirit, perfectly suited for extended maturation.
Aged for a minimum of sixteen years in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry oak casks, the spirit undergoes a transformative period. This prolonged interaction with the wood mellows the intense peat, integrating it with layers of dried fruit, vanilla, and a subtle sweetness, culminating in a remarkably complex and harmonious dram.
Tasting notes
Nose: An immediate, profound surge of intense peat smoke, reminiscent of a smouldering bonfire on a windswept coast, interwoven with notes of iodine, seaweed, and a hint of medicinal balm. Underlying sweetness of dried fruits, vanilla, and a subtle sherry influence emerges.
Palate: A rich, full-bodied entry, delivering a powerful yet balanced wave of sweet smoke, tar, and brine. Dark chocolate, espresso, and a touch of chilli spice develop, complemented by a deep, malty sweetness and a hint of dried figs. The texture is oily and coating.
Finish: Exceptionally long and warming, with a persistent, lingering peat smoke that slowly fades into notes of sweet tobacco, oak spice, and a final whisper of sea salt. A truly memorable and complex conclusion.
