Bordeaux Red
Bordeaux red is almost always a blend, and which grape leads depends on which side of the Gironde the vineyard sits on.
On the Left Bank — the Médoc and Graves — the soil is deep gravel, which drains and holds heat, and Cabernet Sauvignon leads. On the Right Bank — Saint-Émilion, Pomerol and their neighbours — the soils are clay and limestone, which stay cooler and wetter, and Merlot leads. Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec fill in around them.
The classifications are not one system. The 1855 list ranks Médoc châteaux (plus Haut-Brion) and has barely changed since. Saint-Émilion runs its own classification and revises it. Pomerol has none at all.
Bordeaux is also a marginal maritime climate, which is why vintage variation here is real rather than a marketing device.
