Penfolds

Penfolds is the house that made Australian red wine legible to the rest of the world, and the thing most people get wrong is the Bin numbers. Bin 2, Bin 28, Bin 389, Bin 707 read like a ladder, and they are not one. A Bin number started life as a storage bay in a warehouse, and it now marks a recipe: a grape mix, a style of oak, a house intention. Bin 2 and Bin 707 are not two rungs of the same staircase, they are two different wines that happen to share a numbering habit.

The range does divide, though. Max's and the low Bins are built for drinking young and generously. The mid Bins, 28 and 138 and 389 and 407, carry more oak and more structure, and they are the wines the house actually rests on. Above them sit St Henri, RWT and Bin 707, each answering the same question a different way, with Grange on its own.

Past roughly the Bin 389 level, extra money buys cellaring capacity and scarcity rather than more pleasure on a weeknight. That is a real thing to buy. It is worth knowing that is what you are buying.
