Chateau Lagrange
Lagrange is the largest classified estate in the Medoc by planted area, which matters more than its 1855 third growth ranking. Suntory bought it in 1983 when it was run down, replanted it, and built the modern selection process that produces the wine sold today. Bottles from before that period and after it are not really the same property.
The range is a ladder. Pagus de Lagrange comes from Haut-Medoc land outside the Saint-Julien boundary and is the everyday bottle. Les Fiefs de Lagrange is the second wine, made from the same vineyard but the younger vines and the lots that did not make the cut, and it drinks well early. The grand vin is the selection, with more new oak and more tannin. There is also a small white, Les Arums, which is Bordeaux Blanc, not Saint-Julien.
The step from Pagus to Fiefs is real. The step from Fiefs to the grand vin buys ageing capacity more than immediate flavour.
