Chateau de Montfaucon is located opposite to Chateauneuf-du-Pape, just across the Rhone River. Its vineyards are spread out between Montfaucon and the two neighbouring towns, Roquemaure and St Genies de Comolas. One of the strengths of Montfaucon is the diversity of soils and exposure combined with a large selection of Rhone grape varieties, which contribute to the great quality and complexity of its wines. Montfaucon is very attracted to the idea that the natural heritage must be conserved, because it is what leads to well balanced and harmonious wines with a true identity of Rhone. Five Rhône Valley grapes are blended to paint the masterpiece that is Baron Louis. These grapes come from the oldest, 100-year old vines on the Montfaucon estate where Baron Louis measures up pound for pound with the more expensive wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Not only does it deliver all the intensity, complexity and style of its famous neighbor, it comes in at less than half the price of most Châteauneufs. The grapes for Baron Louis are sourced from the estate vineyards in the Lirac AOC - one of the recognized 13 crus in the Rhône Valley. Balanced from start to finish, it's a rich and deep blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Carignan and Mourvèdre. After 18 months of aging in small oak barrels, full-bodied flavors of dark cherry and blackberry mingle with hints of mocha, spice and leather. The soft undertones of oak are a plus, not a distraction, as the pure fruit continues to shine through. With every vintage I marvel at Rudi de Pins' fine talent as his wine making prowess continues to evolve toward perfection. There's a reason he's the master of Lirac. Rudi has undying passion and he leads by example which translates to top quality wine at a hell of a price! "It offers aromas of leather, cedar and vanilla, but those barrel aging notes are balanced by notes of dark fruit, plum and spice. The palate is ample and silky, and there are aromas of liquorice on a long finish. This wine has clearly taken its place as one of the best Liracs." - 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
