California is warm on paper and much less warm in the places that matter, and the mechanism is fog.

Cold Pacific water pulls marine air inland through gaps in the coastal ranges. Where it reaches — Carneros, the Sonoma Coast, the Santa Maria and Sta. Rita Hills valleys running east to west — nights drop sharply and the growing season stretches out. Where it does not reach, such as the upper Napa Valley floor and much of Paso Robles, days stay hot and ripening runs fast.

That is why Napa Cabernet and Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, grown an hour apart, are built on opposite principles.

Napa Valley is Cabernet Sauvignon country by reputation and by planting. Sonoma is more mixed. The Central Coast covers the widest range of all.
