Margan Family Wines was founded by Andrew Margan in Broke Fordwich, Hunter Valley, with estate-owned vineyards and single-estate production. James Halliday Five Star (top 10%).
Region
The Hunter Valley is Australia's oldest commercial wine region, planted in the 1820s. It is humid, and rain at harvest is frequent — constraints that produced a distinctive style rather than a lesser one.
Variety & Style
Hunter Shiraz is nothing like South Australian Shiraz: medium bodied, lower in alcohol, built on earth and leather rather than concentrated black fruit. Very few regions outside Australia manage to imitate it.
What to Expect
If Shiraz means Barossa density to you, this will surprise. It is light, savoury and unreliant on oak. That is regional identity, not a shortfall.
Serving
16°C, lightly chilled if you like. Roast chicken, pork, mushrooms, Chinese braised dishes. Cellars 10 years.
