Chateau Pape Clement
Pape Clement has been planted since the early 1300s, which makes it the oldest working vineyard in Bordeaux, and it now sits inside the Pessac suburbs with houses on three sides. The thing people get wrong is filing it as a red wine estate that also happens to make a white. The white is made in tiny volume and is the more unusual wine of the two; the red has plenty of company at its price, the white has almost none.
The range divides first by colour and then by rank. On the red side there is the grand vin and Le Clementin, the second wine, which sees the same cellar and less of the best fruit. On the white side, barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon behave nothing like the reds and age on a different clock. Whites and large formats sit apart from the vintage ladder entirely.
The step from second wine to grand vin is real. The step between neighbouring grand vin vintages mostly is not, and that is where paying more stops buying flavour.
The list below is sorted by price, lowest first.
