Château Cos d'Estournel
Cos d'Estournel is the estate on the Saint-Estèphe boundary with the pagoda roofline, and the thing most people still get wrong is the appellation rather than the estate. Saint-Estèphe carries a reputation for being hard and tannic. Cos has not made wine like that in thirty years: there is a good deal of Merlot in the blend and the texture sits closer to Pauillac than to the cliché.
Les Pagodes de Cos comes from the estate's own vineyard, weighted towards younger vines and the parcels with more clay. It sees less new oak and is assembled to drink early. That is a decision about style taken before harvest, not a sorting of what failed afterwards.
For a dinner this year, Les Pagodes does the job, and its older vintages are the most useful thing on this list. The grand vin is worth the step up only if the bottle will sit for eight years or more. Below that you are paying for structure you will not taste.
The list below is sorted by price, lowest first.
