Chateau Prieure-Lichine

Most people picture a chateau as a house with its vineyard around it. Prieure-Lichine is not that. The estate is a patchwork of small parcels scattered across Margaux, assembled plot by plot by Alexis Lichine from the 1950s onward, and it touches most of the communes in the appellation. That is the property's real signature, and the thing people miss when they read the label as a single hillside.

The range here is mostly the grand vin across vintages, from recent bottles to a handful of older ones, plus magnums and the occasional large format. What separates them is age and how the vintage ran, not a different wine. The younger vintages are firmer and need air; the older ones have already done that work.

Beyond a certain price the money is buying scarcity and bottle size rather than more flavour. A magnum is a serving decision. A 1980s bottle is a condition gamble worth taking only if the occasion suits it.
